History

Dating back to the early Middle Ages, the Cinque Terre villages were founded by farmers and fishermen seeking refuge in the cliffs. Over centuries, terraced vineyards were built into the rugged terrain. Though relatively isolated for much of history, modernization and tourism have since brought these fishing villages global recognition while still preserving their rustic charm and cultural identity.
