History

Olympia’s history dates back to the 8th century BCE, when it became the site of the ancient Olympic Games, held in honor of Zeus. The sanctuary thrived as a major religious and athletic center, with monumental structures like the Temple of Zeus, which once housed one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—the massive statue of Zeus by Phidias. The games continued for over a millennium until they were banned in 393 CE by Emperor Theodosius I.
