History

Meteora’s monasteries were constructed during the 14th and 15th centuries by monks seeking refuge from political instability. Originally accessed by ladders and ropes, these monasteries provided isolation and protection. At its peak, there were 24 monasteries, of which six remain active today. Meteora's cultural and historical significance has earned it UNESCO World Heritage status.
