History

Arthur’s Pass was named after Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson, who surveyed the route in 1864. It became an important crossing for early Māori and later European settlers. The construction of the Otira Tunnel in 1923 turned it into a vital link between Canterbury and the West Coast. Today, it’s one of New Zealand’s most scenic and historically significant alpine routes.
