TranzAlpine

The TranzAlpine train journey stretches from Christchurch on the east coast to Greymouth on the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island. This remarkable ride takes you through a diverse landscape featuring the patchwork farmlands of Canterbury Plains, the dramatic gorges and rivers of the Waimakariri River, and the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps. History

The TranzAlpine railway line was officially opened in 1923, linking Christchurch with the rugged west coast town of Greymouth. Initially developed to facilitate coal and freight transport, it quickly became popular for passenger travel due to its spectacular scenery. In 1987, the route was relaunched as the TranzAlpine scenic train, and it has since become one of New Zealand’s most iconic rail experiences, celebrated for its engineering and scenic beauty.
