History

Greymouth has a history deeply tied to Māori heritage and European settlement. Originally known as Māwhera by Māori tribes, it became an important site during New Zealand’s gold rush in the 1860s. Coal mining and jade (pounamu) carving also contributed to its development. Today, Greymouth reflects its industrious past while embracing tourism and eco-adventures in the surrounding natural beauty.
