History

Yala was first designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and later became a national park in 1938. Historically, it was a hunting ground for British colonialists. Ancient ruins within the park, including temples and reservoirs, indicate its importance during the Ruhuna Kingdom era. Today, it serves as a crucial conservation area for Sri Lanka’s wildlife.
