History

Polonnaruwa became Sri Lanka’s capital in the 11th century after the decline of Anuradhapura. King Parakramabahu I transformed it into a prosperous kingdom with advanced irrigation systems, including the famous Parakrama Samudraya reservoir. The city thrived until the late 13th century, when invasions led to its abandonment. Today, its ruins reflect Sri Lanka’s golden age of culture and engineering.
