History

Founded in 1848 by Scottish settlers, Dunedin became New Zealand’s largest city during the Otago Gold Rush in the 1860s. Its Scottish roots are evident in the city’s name, architecture, and traditions. The Otago Peninsula was traditionally home to Māori communities and later developed into a farming region. Today, conservation efforts protect its diverse wildlife and natural beauty.
