History

Lake Tekapo has long been an important site for the Māori, who traveled through the area on food-gathering expeditions. European settlement began in the 1850s with sheep farming. In recent decades, it has gained fame for its pristine night skies and natural beauty, leading to the establishment of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve in 2012.
