History

Diu was ruled by several dynasties, including the Mauryas, Chudasamas, and Islamic rulers, before being colonized by the Portuguese in 1535. It became an important Portuguese stronghold, guarding trade routes in the Arabian Sea. Diu remained under Portuguese control for over 400 years until it was liberated in 1961, along with Goa and Daman, becoming part of India. The town’s architecture still reflects its colonial legacy.
