Ephesus

Turkey, MiddleEast

Ephesus is an archaeological treasure that once served as a major trade and religious center of the Roman world. Visitors can walk through its ancient streets, marvel at the magnificent Library of Celsus, and explore the Great Theatre, which once held over 25,000 spectators. The House of the Virgin Mary, believed to be the final resting place of Mary, the mother of Jesus, adds a spiritual significance to this historical site.

History

Founded in the 10th century BC, Ephesus flourished under Greek and Roman rule, becoming an important city for commerce, religion, and governance. The Temple of Artemis, once among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was later destroyed. The city was abandoned in the 15th century due to earthquakes and shifting coastlines, but its ruins remain a testament to its glorious past.
