History

Coron has a deep historical and cultural significance. It was originally inhabited by the Tagbanua people, one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Philippines. The island played a crucial role in World War II, as 12 Japanese warships were sunk in its waters by the U.S. Navy in 1944, making it one of the world’s best wreck-diving sites. Over the years, Coron has been recognized for its sustainable tourism efforts and remains a protected area to preserve its marine ecosystem and indigenous heritage.
