Kulen Mountain

Kulen Mountain, also known as Phnom Kulen, is one of Cambodia’s most revered historical and natural sites. Located about 50 km from Siem Reap, it features lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and hidden ancient temples. The site is famous for the River of a Thousand Lingas, where intricate carvings of Hindu deities and lingas are etched into the riverbed. Preah Ang Thom, a large reclining Buddha statue, is another significant attraction for pilgrims. Visitors can swim in the refreshing waterfalls, hike through scenic trails, and explore the ruins of early Khmer civilization. It is a perfect combination of adventure, history, and spirituality.

History

Phnom Kulen holds great historical importance as the birthplace of the Khmer Empire. It was here that King Jayavarman II declared independence from Java and established the Angkor civilization in the 9th century. The mountain was a major religious center, with Hindu and later Buddhist influences. Over time, many temples and carvings were created, making it a sacred pilgrimage site for Cambodians today.
