History

Founded in the 14th century, Phnom Penh became Cambodia’s capital in 1866 under King Norodom. It flourished during the French colonial period but suffered devastation under the Khmer Rouge regime (1975-1979). Since then, the city has rebuilt itself into a thriving metropolis.
