History

Plettenberg Bay's history dates back thousands of years, initially inhabited by the Khoisan people. The Portuguese explorer, Manuel de Perestrelo, named it "Bahia Formosa" (Beautiful Bay) in the 15th century. In 1778, the Dutch East India Company established a timber outpost here, naming it after then-governor Joachim van Plettenberg. The town grew as a port and agricultural hub in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, it is a popular tourist destination known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage.
